Belmont Road Junction Improvement FAQs

Why are we doing the work, why now?

This work is taking place following public consultation in early 2022, which was greatly in favour of the changes. This scheme will allow for easier pedestrian, cyclist, and bus travel, which will in turn ease traffic by encouraging more active travel and public transport use.

What alternative routes and travel options are available?

A traffic diversion will be in place during the works for any eastbound travel, as well as both pedestrian and cyclist diversion routes. Please carefully follow the signage near the site for these diversions, and plan your journeys ahead of time to allow for any possible delays.

Why does the work take this long?

This scheme will take approximately 10 weeks in total, due to the extent of the renovations. There is extensive excavation required to remove the traffic signals as well as building the new crossing points.

Why isn't work carried out 24 hours a day seven days a week to speed up work?

We can assure you that this has been planned meticulously with both efficiency and cost in mind. Due to this region being an arterial route, it was important to keep a flow of traffic, and hence a full closure was not possible in this region during the daytime. Working for 24-hours will cause disruption to the residents, and our staff need breaks from the work.

Towards the end of the works there will be a full closure for approximately 3 nights which has been programmed to complete most of the disruptive work quickly and at a time that will cause the least inconvenience. This will be confirmed closer to the time and is subject to changes.

Can traffic signals be adjusted to give more priority?

Any appropriate traffic signal changes will be handled by our team in order to ease congestion due to the works.

Can the road works be restricted to off peak times?

Due to the depth of excavation required, it will not be possible to safely cordon off the works area to completely reopen the footways and both streams of traffic during peak times or weekends. This would greatly lengthen the span of the works, and so the restrictions will be in place for the entire length of the works.
