Active Travel

Summary

  • Where: City wide
  • When: Ongoing
  • What: Schemes to create safer spaces for walking, wheeling, and cycling
  • Why: Support more people to travel sustainably, free up space on the roads and create a greener and more sustainable city
  • How: Funding from the Government's Active Travel Fund and other source.

To help people walk, cycle and wheel safely around Southampton more often, the Council uses funding from the Government’s Active Travel Fund, local funding and contributions from developers to improve facilities for active travel.  This supports the ambition in Connected Southampton 2040, our long-term transport plan, and Cycle Strategy to make Southampton a modern, liveable and sustainable place to live, work and visit.

This will allow us to create the Southampton Cycle Network (SCN) and places where people can safely walk and wheel – whether this is to work, shops, school or for leisure.

Since 2020, Southampton City Council has received almost £3m from the Government's Active Travel Fund to create better spaces for walking, wheeling, and cycling.

We'll be engaging with local residents, businesses, emergency services and other key stakeholders to get feedback and work together to shape schemes before they are put in place. We'll be consulting in a number of ways including with public opinion surveys and online consultation events.
