  • Why: To make it safer and easier to walk and cycle along West Quay Road, part of the SCN1 cycle route to the east of the city.
  • How: Funded as part of a Transforming Cities Fund awarded in March 2020

August 2024: COMPLETE

Work on West Quay Road has now been completed. The photos below show some of the finished works. We appreciate your cooperation from individuals impacted by the road construction. The Transforming Cities fund has enabled:

  • Installed a dropped crossing and tactile paving as well as widening the crossing island.
  •  Widened, re-kerbed and resurfaced sections of the shared footway and provide continuous crossings.
  • Improved cycle access from the cycle lane along the central reservation across the service road exit to the Toucan crossing opposite Ikea. This included the introduction of cyclist detection and signalling as well as improved signage.
  • Work on the shared use cycleway/footway to change the signage and markings for the cycle lane to improve access and safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

Phasing of work

Balfour Beatty is working in partnership with Southampton City Council to manage the highways service across Southampton. As part of this, we are improving access for pedestrians and cyclists along West Quay Road from Herbert Walker Avenue to Harbour Parade (see map). 

Phase 1: 19 October for up to 1 week - Herbert Walker Avenue junction with Mayflower Roundabout

These works are now finished.

Phase 2: 19 October for up to 2 weeks overnight – West Quay Road service road to the industrial area (see map)

These works are now finished.

Phase 3: 26 October for up to 3 weeks – West Quay Road from Mayflower Roundabout to Harbour Parade

These works are now complete.

Phase 4: 2 November for up to 3 weeks – Exit to West Quay Service Road

These works are now finished.

Phase 5: Week commencing 23 November for up to 1 week – West Quay Road southbound, between Harbour Parade to Ikea

The works are now finished.
