Utility and Repairs to the Network

Generic Train Image 1

What are utility works?

Utility works are immediate short term or long term repairs that are carried out to infrastructure to protect and reduce threat to the public. The utility works page purpose is to deliver updates to Southampton's residents on major projects, urgent repairs, and other issues that may affect local residents' journeys, such as incidents surrounding Southern Water, electricity, or railway repairs.

For the most up to date information, please ensure you are following the @scchighways.bsky.social BlueSky account for regular updates.

What are network repairs?

As part of our routine annual maintenance, we make minor repairs to road surface 'network' or footways which prolong the lifespan of surfaces. This might include:

Patching
Cutting-out and replacing part of the surface area of the road with tarmac; anything from a localised patch where there are a cluster of repeat potholes, through to a larger area perhaps extending across the whole width of the road.

Pothole repairs
There are dedicated (two-person) crews, that can attend any of the city’s roads and footways to repair potholes. These teams have a focus on potholes that have reached the policy standard for repair but are also able to respond quickly to urgent and more hazardous potholes.

More information on road renewal and the forward plan can be found here.
