The Active Travel Zone implemented in St Denys has taken shape through collaboration with the residents of the neighbourhood. Southampton City Council worked with the St Denys community to address concerns relating to air quality, levels of traffic, and safety for walking and cycling in the area that were raised in the Your St Denys Your Say survey in late 2019.
The St Denys Active Travel Zone is funded by money from the government’s Transforming Cities Fund.

Kent Road modal filter - October 2023
Works are planned for one week from 9 October to install the permanent modal filter bollards, patch the carriageway, install signage and relocate the planters. Following this (date TBC), enhanced lighting will be installed under the road and railway bridges.
St Denys Speed Cushion installation - September 2023
As part of the St Denys Active Travel Zone, we will be installing traffic calming speed cushions in three locations in St Denys starting Monday 25th September over a period of 3 weeks, which will involve some closures in order to allow us to excavate and install these speed cushions.
North Road – Monday 25th September for 1 week
We will be working across four points of North Road, with a closure in place between Adelaide Road and Stanley Road, with some on-street parking in the region suspended during the works. There will be access afforded to driveways in the area where possible. The new surface will be given time to cure before we return in the final week to install the speed cushions.
Stanley Road – Monday 2nd October for 3 days
We will be working across two points of Stanley Road, with closure in place between North Road and St Denys Road, with some on-street parking in the region suspended during the works. There will be access afforded to driveways in the area where possible. The new surface will be given time to cure before we return in the final week to install the speed cushions.
Adelaide Road – Wednesday 4th October for 2 days
We will be working across three points of Adelaide Road, with closure in place between South Road and St Denys Road, with some on-street parking in the region suspended during the works. There will be access afforded to driveways in the area where possible.
Revisit to North Road and Stanley Road for 1 week
Final installations to be made on North Road and Stanley Road, with the same closures as before, once the surface has cured.
Properties close to the carriageway may experience a temporary disturbance such as flashing lights and reversing sirens as this can be a noisy process. We would like to take this opportunity to apologise in advance for any inconvenience or disruption this work may cause.

One of the key aims at the outset of the St Denys ATZ project was to improve the local area and make active travel safer, easier and more attractive. An experimental trial of modal filters was undertaken on Kent Road and North Road and as these were shown to successfully support the project's aims the decision was taken to make the trial measures permanent at both locations. This has already taken place in North Road and will be undertaken in Kent Road in the coming months.

Alongside the the measures implemented in Kent Road and North Road a number of continuous crossings were implemented at key junctions throughout St Denys and additional works were carried out to improve access to the Saltmead footpath on Priory Road, at the junction of Aberdeen Road. These focused on creating a safer pedestrian environment and making the area more attractive.
During our initial consultation on the St Denys ATZ, one of the most popular suggestions for how we could improve the area was to “ask drivers to turn off their engines at the railway crossing.” We are pleased to confirm that ‘no idling’ signs have now been installed at four locations close to the railway crossing in the St Denys area.
In Autumn 2023, the filter on Kent Road will be enhanced with a permanent scheme. This will include lighting upgrades, surface repairs, coloured entry points with new signage and future installation of public art.
In south St Denys, traffic calming will be installed in Summer 2023 in the streets around North Road to make active travel routes to St Denys Primary School safer and complement the traffic filter and 20mph limit delivered as part of the ATZ.
