December 2023
We are able to complete a major portion of the work before Christmas, which will aid the completion of this project ahead of schedule. These works will involve resurfacing and relining of portions of St Denys Road and Cobden Bridge, which has been programmed to take place overnight to reduce disruption to residents.
This work is planned to begin Monday 11th December 2023, and will take approximately 6 nights, however we will not be working at the weekend unless we experience delays. Working hours will be between 8:00pm and 6:00am, and during the daytime, the works area will reduce to the restrictions that are currently in place.
During this work, a full closure of St Denys Road will be in place between Thomas Lewis Way and Bitterne Park Triangle, including Cobden Bridge.
The planned improvements include:
- Resurfacing of Cobden Bridge, Priory Road junction, Aberdeen Road Junction, and other smaller locations along St Denys Road.
- Relining of St Denys Road and Cobden Bridge between Thomas Lewis Way and Bitterne Park Triangle, including the installation of segregated mandatory cycle lanes on St Denys Road.
Once the surface has had time to cure, we will return and install colourful surface finishes to indicate the new cycle lanes, as well as renewing anti-skid on the carriageway. This is expected to take place in Spring 2024.
Important information for residents:
Due to the large nature of the works, access to the roads in St Denys between Thomas Lewis Way and Bitterne Park Triangle will only be permitted via Thomas Lewis Way, and there will be no access from Cobden Bridge. Access from Thomas Lewis Way will be controlled by traffic marshals during the closure hours, and to aid this disruptive time for residents, a “waiting area” will be fenced-off on Thomas Lewis Way for residents to park within and await the traffic marshal’s instruction. We will always have marshals present, however there may be delays whilst we accommodate traffic in and out of the works area.
November 2023
We have been informed of some Network Rail works taking place on the Adelaide Road rail crossing, which is part of our signed diversion route during the works.
We will reopen a portion of our closure on Priory Road during the times that Network Rail is present, as traffic will not be able to use the rail crossing on Adelaide Road as a diversion route.
The dates of these closures on the Adelaide Road rail crossing are as following:

During these times, the southern portion of the closure at the junction of Priory Road will be reopened to allow traffic access and egress from St Denys Road in the absence of the diversion route. Whilst the southern closure will be reopened to allow traffic, please be aware the northern portion of the closure will still be in place, so traffic will only be able to turn left or right onto St Denys Road and not straight ahead.

Please be aware that we will still have barriers or fencing around our works areas on Priory Road, and traffic lights may be in operaration to keep the junction safe.
October 2023
As part of the Eastleigh to Southampton Corridor, we are making improvements to the junction of St Denys Road and Priory Road, which is being funded by UK government as part of the Transforming Cities Fund.
Our work at the Priory Road/St Denys Road junction is programmed to take place in two phases, with Phase 1 detailed below, and Phase 2 is planned to begin in the New Year 2024 with residents informed closer to the time. Phase 1 improvements will include:
- New crossing points on all arms of the Priory Road/St Denys Road junction including pedestrian countdown timers
- Full traffic light system upgrade to modernise and future-proof the junction traffic systems, including advanced cycle signals on all arms of the junction
- Other minor improvements to drainage, kerbing, tactile pavings and road markings
- Works to create mandatory segregated cycle lanes on St Denys Road, which will be finished as part of Phase 2 in January 2024
This work is planned to start from Monday 16th October 2023 and will take approximately 10 weeks. During this time, there will be localised restrictions in place in order to allow us to complete our works, as detailed on the map below:
The majority of these works will be focused at the Priory Road/St Denys Road junction. Priory Road north and south will be closed at the junction with St Denys Road, with access maintained for residents via Adelaide Road and Kent Road. Please follow the signed diversion routes for resident access, or speak to the team on site for help or clarification.
During the works, temporary two-way lights will maintain traffic flow on St Denys Road near the works area on Priory Road junction, so please plan your journeys ahead of time to avoid delays. Pedestrian access will always be maintained through diversions and temporary push-button crossings in place on St Denys Road. Some on-street parking on St Denys Road will be suspended, however pedestrian access to businesses will be maintained.
We will inform residents and the public of the dates for the Phase 2, which will include overnight closures to resurface sections of St Denys Road and add new road markings and the mandatory segregated cycle lanes, closer to the time. These are currently expected to take place in the New Year 2024. The road will be completely reopened in time for Christmas, however temporary road markings or temporary surfaces may be in place.
Working hours for all phases will be weekdays between 7:00am – 5:30pm, however we may also work on Saturdays, and the restrictions will be in place for the extent of the works.
Properties close to the carriageway may experience a temporary disturbance such as flashing lights and reversing sirens, as this can be a noisy process. We would like to take this opportunity to apologise in advance for any inconvenience or disruption this work may cause.
July and August 2023
Following the first Traffic Regulation Order for St Denys Road, which closed in March 2023, we have met with the local businesses who had further questions about the scheme.
We have discussed alternative options which retain some of the on-street parking and changing the location where the cycle lane starts from. The new design has been amended to reflect this.
The second Traffic Regulation Order is now closed.
We will review all the feedback and this will be communicated to businesses and residents in the area.
