Extension of 20mph speed limit

In 2025, a 20mph speed limit was introduced on residential roads either side of Portswood Broadway. Feedback has been positive overall, and there have been requests to extend the area covered by this speed limit. Such extensions are consistent with Southampton City Council’s policy, which supports lower speed zones where communities request them and funding is available.

A formal consultation on extending the 20mph speed limit took place in April 2026 via a Traffic Regulation Order. A decision has now been made to convert the advertised roads to a 20mph speed limit. This is currently planned for roll out in late 2026. For the area covered, please see the map below.
