September 2026 Update
Beginning on Monday 21 September 2026, we will be working on drainage channel improvements, kerb and gully repairs, and resurfacing of sections of the carriageway. Following the feedback we received in July's TRO consultation (see post below), we will also be taking this opportunity to remove the majority of buildouts and remediating these areas.
The works are expected to take approximately 4 weeks with working hours on weekdays between 7:30am and 4:30pm.
To help minimise disruption, the programme will be delivered in phases as outlined below. This approach will allow residents’ access to be maintained wherever it is safe and practical to do so.

Pedestrian routes will remain available at all times. During specific stages, vehicle movements may be restricted within the closure area for through traffic; however, our site team will help maintain access where it is safe and practical to do so. Emergency access will be maintained throughout.
July 2026 Update
People who live, work, study or travel through Glen Eyre Road are being invited to have their say on proposed changes to the road as Southampton City Council launches a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) consultation.
The proposals have been developed in response to feedback from residents and road users following the introduction of the Glen Eyre Road scheme in January 2024. While the scheme has helped reduce vehicle speeds and support safer travel, concerns have been raised about the operation of the build-outs.
The council is therefore proposing to remove most of the build-outs, while retaining those that support the electric vehicle charging bays. Other proposed changes include removing the e-scooter and e-bike parking area and making minor amendments to parking and waiting restrictions.
The work is proposed now to align with planned resurfacing and drainage improvements, helping to minimise disruption and reduce costs.
The consultation gives local people the opportunity to review the detailed proposals and share their views before a final decision is made. Subject to the outcome of the consultation, the changes could be delivered alongside the upcoming resurfacing and drainage works.
March 2026 Update
The build-outs on Glen Eyre Road were recently discussed at a meeting of the full council. Following that meeting, officers have commissioned a study that includes a safety review, compliance with design standards and using feedback from residents as well as on-site observations. A decision on the future of the traffic calming measures will be made once the study has concluded. Residents will be updated on these decisions prior to any work taking place. The study is expected to complete in late spring 2026.
Project Details
The project delivered a cycle quietway along Glen Eyre Road with a combination of cycle lanes, build-outs and raised tables linking existing shared sue facilities on Lovers Walk and Bassett Avenue . The busy footway between Lovers Walk and University Campus was also widened to better cater for peak footfall and a new pedestrian crossing was added at the junction with Burgess Road.
