Why are we doing the work, why now?
This work has been programmed to coincide with the university terms, starting after the moving out date for the students in the area, and then ending before the move in date for the new term. This also overlaps with the summer holidays for other schools, to minimise disruption in the area.
What alternative routes and travel options are available?
From Monday 16th October, Glen Eyre Road between Bassett Avenue and Violet Road will become accessible for residents only, and there will be no through-route for traffic. Due to this a diversion route will be clearly signed for any other traffic, with pedestrian access always maintained. Cyclists may be asked to dismount in order to navigate the works area safely.
Buses, coaches, and other public travel will advise on their own diversions.
Can traffic signals be adjusted to give more priority?
Our expert Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) team will work to watch and maintain any traffic during the works and will adjust the signals accordingly. It is still recommended to plan your journeys ahead of time.
Can the road works be restricted to off peak times?
The depth of excavation required would make it impossible to remove the traffic restrictions around the works areas during peak times. It would also considerably lengthen the timescale of the work, and not allow time for the new surfaces to cure properly.
How is the work funded?
This work is funded as part of the Transforming Cities Fund (TCF) awarded in March 2020, in combination with the Active Travel Fund.
Why can't I use Violet Road during of the works?
Due to concerns raised regarding the level of safety during school pick up and drop off times for Cantell School, the Bus Gate and camera enforcement on Violet Road has been reinstated during the works on Glen Eyre Road from Monday 26th June 2023, and the diversion route will now no longer include Violet Road. Please follow the amended diversion route when travelling this area.
To ease the transition, we will have traffic marshals on site for the first few days of this change. Following this, enforcement will once again be in place as normal.
Is there work happening on Elmsleigh Gardens and Glen Eyre Way?
Following the completion of Phases 1 and 2, feedback on the scheme from local residents and users of the area identified a need for new crossing points on various junctions on Glen Eyre Road. Due to this, we will have returned to install new uncontrolled tactile crossing points to the entrances of Elmsleigh Gardens, as well as Glen Eyre Way.
This work is programmed to begin Monday 4th December 2023, and will take approximately 3 weeks to complete. Whilst we work on these junctions, lane restrictions or closures will be in place, however the impact of these is expected to be minimal to regular users of Glen Eyre Road, and residents have been contacted directly regarding their access.
