Why are you doing this work?

Portsmouth Road, which serves the local community with routes to local schools and access to green spaces, has been identified by the Road Safety Foundation, on behalf of the DfT, as a road that would benefit from additional road safety measures to help minimise the risk of accidents.

These upgrades will also support people in making sustainable and active journeys by bus, walking and wheeling in and around the Woolston, Itchen, Weston and Sholing areas.

Will pedestrian routes be restricted?

Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout our work, there may however be times when you may need to cross to the other side of the road, or you may need to use temporary footways or temporary push-button crossings.

Will my bus route be affected?

Whilst we work closely with the bus networks to alert them of any future or current works, the bus operators will design and maintain their own diversions or temporary stops. If you are planning to travel by bus during this scheme, please check in advance with your bus service to see if your route is affected at Bluestar – Shining across your city.

Will I experience delays whilst travelling?

There will be temporary traffic signals and pedestrian crossings in operation 24/7. The traffic signals will be manned during peak times to assist traffic flow. The temporary traffic management that is in place to ensure the safety of the public and our workforce is likely to extend travelling times, please plan your journeys.

How are these works being funded?

The Portsmouth Road scheme was identified by the Road Safety Foundation on behalf of the Department for Transport for £875,000 of funding from the Safer Roads Fund to help minimise the risk of accidents.
