September 2020 Updates
Scheme update - 29 September
The scheme is now complete! We finished the last of the surface printing at the weekend.
Thank you for your patience during this work - we appreciate that it has caused a long period of inconvenience however we hope that it is justified by the finished result.
Phase 5 update and plan - w/c 21 September
We will need to close Meggeson Avenue at the junction with Hazelwood Road whilst we complete the surface printing at this junction. We hoped to keep Meggeson Avenue open, but due to safety concerns it is not possible. The road will be closed Monday - Wednesday between 9:30am and 2:30pm.
We will then be completing the lining along the length of Meggeson Avenue (Townhill Way - Hillgrove Road), which will require a closure of Meggeson Avenue on Saturday 26 September.

Due to the poor weather we had last week, we were unable to complete the work at Cutbush Lane. We will aim to complete it this week, before moving back to Wakefield and Benhams Road to finish the surface printing at that junction.
Again, this work is weather dependent so these dates could change. We will endeavour to meet this proposed schedule.

Work update - 13 August
Meggeson Avenue is now open as we completed the work quicker than we expected. There are still cones out because we have to finish the lining, but we will be moving onto resurfacing section B tomorrow.
Resurfacing update - 12 August
The searing temperatures today along with some problems we encountered at the asphalt plant has meant that we started later than expected and the surface which is poured at over 180 degrees has simply not cooled enough to drive on.
If vehicles were to travel on the road now, it would cause damage and mean it would have to be re-laid, so we are taking the exceptional measure of keeping the road closed. However from 5am Thursday we hope to be able to allow access to residents along Meggeson Avenue and the side roads.
These delays also mean that works on Paulet and Hallet closes to build ramps to the main Meggeson carriageway which were originally planned for today will now be undertaken tomorrow.
From 12pm Thursday afternoon there will be no access into these closes, until we finish the work and the road is cured. This will likely be early evening. We therefore advise that if you need to use your vehicle during this time you move your car elsewhere before 12pm.
We understand that this is a big inconvenience but please be assured we are doing everything we can to minimise the disruption and to complete the work as quickly and safely as possible. We will open the road as soon as we are able to after the works. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience or disruption this causes.
Access to Cutbush Lane update - 10 August
We have now changed the plan for vehicle access to and from Cutbush Lane when we are working across this junction. We will unlock the barriers on Cutbush Lane to allow vehicles to access/egress via Atlantic Park View. This will maintain access at all times to those residents on Cutbush Lane.
Residents will receive a further letter confirming this, as well as confirmation of which dates we will be working at this junction.
Phase 5 update and plan - w/c 10 August
We are ahead of schedule for the planing and concrete repairs, so we will be able to re-open Meggeson Avenue on Monday and Tuesday. Please note, on Wednesday and Friday we will be resurfacing the main Meggeson Avenue carriageway, where access to and from side roads to Meggeson Avenue will not be possible between 7:30am and 6pm. We advise that you move vehicles in advance if you will require access during these times.
You can see a map showing sections A and B here.

July 2020 Updates
We are installing mosaics in the area - 31 July
Working with SO18 Big Local, we have designed some mosaic art pieces to be installed on street name plates and speed limit signs to reflect the local nature of the Townhill area.
There are two designs below, out of a total of twelve. You will be able to see the others for yourself when they are installed in the near future! For more information on SO18 Big Local’s project, you can visit their website here.
Resurfacing of Meggeson Avenue starts in August - 29 July
We will be starting Phase 5 of the scheme - resurfacing Meggeson Avenue and installing traffic calming features - on Monday 3 August. Please keep an eye on this page, as we will be providing regular updates and advice throughout the work.
June 2020 Updates
Improvements so far - 22 June
Here are some of the improvements we have already made along Meggeson Avenue:
- Drainage improvements
- The construction of two new zebra crossings by Wakefield Road and Ozier Road. These will not be in use until the resurfacing is complete, which is scheduled for August
- The bus stop opposite Hallet Close has been moved into the the lay by to create space between the two bus stops at this point along Meggeson Avenue
Phase 4 has started - 15 June
Phase 4 of the work has started, which involves footway improvements between Cutbush Lane and Hillgrove Road.
Ozier Road - 10 June
The new on-street parking area at Ozier Road has now been completed. We are hoping to line the bay markings soon, however it's good to see that it is being made use of already.
May 2020 Updates
Partial reopening of schools - 28 May
With the news of schools partially reopening from Monday 1 June, we have been working hard to complete the works around the Townhill Infant and Junior Schools to minimise the impact on them. All work at the Benhams Road junction is complete, as well as the full closures of Meggeson Avenue.
We are currently working at Cutbush Lane. The traffic island was removed yesterday which allows for more space to work safely and efficiently. Whilst we reform the kerbline at this junction to make it narrower, we will be working under temporary traffic signals to enable access to the schools via Cutbush Lane.
Phase 3 Update - 06 May
Works to continue with the footway improvements along Meggeson Avenue have been scheduled to start on Monday, 11 May. This will include repairs or changes to kerbs and footway resurfacing under temporary traffic lights, at the following locations:
- Paulet Close to Wakefield Road (Wakefield Road side) - from Monday 11 May for approximately 3 weeks
- Ozier Road and Rowlands Walk - from Monday 11 May for approximately 5 weeks. This includes the closure of Ozier Road for this period. As part of this, we will also begin building the new off-street parking on Ozier Road near the junction of Ozier Road and Meggeson Avenue.
- Wakefield Road to former Ark pub site (Wakefield Road side) - from Monday 1 June for approximately 1 week
April 2020 Updates
Work is continuing - 07 April
The current Government guidance has advised that construction should continue if it is done safely. We have put several precautions in place to protect our staff and others around them while they are carrying out their work. Staff are observing the advised 2m distance wherever possible and we have also implemented a new policy permitting only one person per vehicle, unless this distance can be maintained. Furthermore, all staff have access to gloves, hand sanitisers and disinfectant to ensure good hygiene is maintained at all times.
While social distancing is a challenge due to the nature of work we are undertaking, we are confident these measures will ensure that staff continue to closely follow the guidelines, while performing their work safely and efficiently. We ask that everyone respects our highway workers in these very difficult circumstances. As this is an evolving situation, we are continuing to monitor the guidance from Government. Please note these dates are indicative.
COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Update - 19 March
Due to the current circumstances involving COVID-19 (Coronavirus), we are constantly monitoring the situation and making preparations for situations where we may have to stop work. At this current time, we are working as normal and will endeavour to meet the proposed schedule of works.
Hazelwood Road Closure - 04 March
Due to operational issues we have closed Hazelwood Road for the duration of phase 1 - please see previous post to see the phasing. Access will be maintained via Roundhill Close. We apologise for the inconvenience.
February 2020 Updates
Traffic Management & Resurfacing - 27 February
As we near the end of our third week of construction, we now look to the final resurfacing of this first stage before we move up Meggeson Avenue. Once again the bad weather due for the rest of the week looks as though it will slightly delay our original date of 28 February, and we have rescheduled this to Monday 2 March. This will also be the day that our traffic management is removed from Townhill Way which will help ease congestion along this road.
(Below) Townhill Way extended island.
After this, we will be working around and opposite the Hazelwood Road junction with Meggeson Avenue. Hazelwood Road will remain open under traffic light control and alternative access can be found via Roundhill Close.
Phase 1 Update - 20 February
The rain continues to pour down but we remain on schedule with the scheme. This morning we moved across Meggeson Avenue to the west side (Roundhill Close side). This is the start of phase 1b. We changed the traffic management arrangements around so that cars now pass on the other side of the road.
The East side works went well. We adjusted the traffic management to allow members of the public to walk alongside of the works (see photo). It is always difficult when drawing up plans for traffic management to balance the need for safe working and minimise disruption. We continually review arrangements and how things are going. We are happy to receive comments about the works but sometimes members of the public swear and threaten the guys on site. In order to protect our staff we use body cameras to record incidents and keep in close contact with the police.
Phase 1 Update - 19 February
A letter was sent to affected residents about phase 1 works. The map below shows the locations of the stages of the work. To see this letter, please click here.
Easter holidays closures - 17 February
Following further consultation, we have now managed to adapt the programme to carry out the Phase 2 closures of Meggeson Avenue during the Easter School holidays. This will minimise disruption for the area.
Work is underway - 14 February
Work started on Meggeson Avenue on Monday 10 February. Despite thoroughly planning beforehand and installing appropriate safety measures for the public, we quickly realised that what we had wasn't quite enough. After observing the influx of children coming out of the primary school adjacent to our working area, we made the decision to install more robust traffic management to stop children walking through coned off areas.
Within a day we replaced the cones with barriers and added a controlled pedestrian crossing to ensure they can safely cross at an appropriate point.
