Latest Updates

December 2024

Since October 2024, we have been installing safety improvements on the Lodge Road junction with Bevois Hill, Thomas Lewis Way and Portswood Road.

We are now approaching the end of the project, and have the opportunity to complete the overnight resurfacing and road markings prior to the New Year so that the road may reopen fully for Christmas.

This work is planned to take place from Monday 16th December 2024, for approximately 5 nights, between 8:00pm and 6:00am - please see works area below.

During this time, there will be a closure of the Lodge Road junction with Bevois Hill, Thomas Lewis Way and Portswood Road during the working hours. The junction will reopen to the original traffic management setup during the daytime, and during the working hours there will be a signed diversion route in place using The Avenue, Charlotte Place Roundabout, and Bevois Hill.

Lodge Road will not be a through-route to Thomas Lewis Way and vice versa, similarly for Portswood Road and Bevois Hill. On Wednesday 18th December 2024, due to a home game at St Marys Stadium, our works will be delayed until 11:00pm to allow for supporters making their way to and from the stadium.

We will return during Spring 2025 to complete green colour surfacing on the cycle infrastructure once the surface has had time to fully embed.

November 2024

The ongoing works to secure the integrity of a section of St Denys Road retaining wall between Adelaide Road and the junction of Thomas Lewis Way have unfortunately met delays due to the discovery of uncharted utilities in the works area, and this has had an impact on the roadworks on Lodge Road junction.

The current traffic management setup, as seen in the October 2024 update below, will now be in place until the completion of the project. We would like to apologise for any inconvenience that this may cause and thank residents and road users for their patience whilst we work to coordinate these planned improvements and unplanned emergency works.

Please note, access to Foster Road for businesses is still possible, however "Road Closed" signs are present to prevent any traffic from attempting to use Foster Road as a through-route, and all businesses on Lodge Road, Bevois Hill, and Portswood Road are still open as usual.

October 2024

The Southampton Highways Partnership has been working with multiple parties to secure the integrity of a section of St Denys Road retaining wall between Adelaide Road and the junction of Thomas Lewis Way, and this work has now been able to progress after careful collaborative planning between all parties. More information on this work can be found here

From Saturday 5th October 2024, these essential repairs will commence on this vital asset. This will regrettably have an impact on the improvements taking place on the Lodge Road/Portswood Road junction, however we would like to assure you that our team have been working diligently to get this issue, which involves multiple partners, to a viable, achievable, and safe delivery.

Changes have been made to the traffic management which will be in place on the Lodge Road/Portswood Road junction and Bevois Hill. These changes will be in place for the first 3 weeks of work, and following the completion of the nearby works on St Denys Road, the traffic management will revert to the original plan as seen below.

The changes to the temporary traffic management are as follows:

  • The section of Bevois Hill between Lodge Road/Portswood Road and Thomas Lewis Way will now be closed, rather than one-way only, for approximately 3 weeks.
  • The Closure on the Thomas Lewis Way Spur Road will not be in place, for approximately 3 weeks.

We would like to thank you for your patience whilst these essential repairs and transformational improvements take place.

October 2024

The improvements on the Lodge Road and Portswood Road junction will begin from Monday 7th October 2024 and will take approximately 10 weeks.

Restrictions in place during construction
During construction, our works will focus on the junction as well as part of Bevois Hill. There will be lane restrictions in place on the junction for the duration of the project, and temporary traffic signals to guide traffic around the works area. We will also close the Thomas Lewis Way spur road (as shown on the map below) with traffic able to access Lodge Road and Portswood Road by using Bevois Hill. Please be aware that during peak times the temporary traffic lights will be manned to help ease congestion.

The junction of Bevois Hill and Forster Road will be closed to provide a storage area for our materials, which will also help keep traffic flowing on Bevois Hill during the installation. During the works, Bevois Hill between Portswood Road and Thomas Lewis Way will be one-way, northbound only, to accommodate our works area. This can be seen on the map below.

Cycle access                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Cycle and e-scooter access will not be possible due to the road closure, cycles and e-scooters are advised to follow the diversion signs at this time or dismount to use temporary walkways. Updates will be posted on our website: https://transport.southampton.gov.uk/lodgeroad.

Bus diversions
Bus routes through Bevois Hill will be impacted by these works. Bus operators will manage and plan their own diversions or temporary bus stops, so we recommend reaching out to the bus providers directly.

Access for businesses and parking for residents
Access to the car park on Bevois Hill (opposite 8 Bevois Hill) will be maintained from the south using the northbound-only section of Bevois Hill. However, there may be potential disruption and changes to access as we carry out the works. If you need constant or immediate access or you have any concerns regarding access, please speak to the team on site.

Access for nearby businesses will be maintained throughout. On-street parking in the area will be restricted due to the works areas, so alternative parking arrangements may be needed.
