Bus Service Improvement Plan Survey
As part of our Bus Service Improvement Plan, we welcomed comments and suggestions relating to local bus services in the Southampton city region. The survey contained a selection of questions together with the ability to provide additional information. The survey ran from 23 October 2023 for three weeks and we received 3,200 responses. - 57% of respondents were female
- Just under half had access to a private motor vehicle (car, van or motorcycle)
- 37% use the bus as a main mode of transport
- 12% walk as a main mode of travel
- 42% drive as a main mode of travel
- 54% satisfied with cost of ticket
- 65% would use the bus more if buses operated more frequently
- 35% would consider using the bus if there were more discounts or passes
- 66% of respondents were satisfied with bus safety
- 39% would use the buses more if there were stops closer to their destination

- Condition of bus stops
- Indirect travel routes
In addition:
- Respondents under 25 used the bus most, compared to other age groups.
- Bus as the main mode of travel has increased by 5 percentage points compared to the last survey in 2021.
- People used the bus most often to go food or grocery shopping (28%), go to work (27%) or other shopping (24%).
- Over half of respondents said that a suitable timetable/more frequent services (65%) and quicker/more direct bus routes (57%) would encourage them to use the bus more often.
- 79% of survey respondents agreed that SCC and bus companies should work together to apply for government funding to replace their diesel buses with electric ones.
