Summary

  • Where: Shirley Road, Dyer Road and Cawte Road
  • When: Monday 4 October for up to 2 months
  • What: Footway and Carriageway improvements
  • Why: To mitigate the impacts of increased traffic from the expansion of St Mark’s School in the surrounding area of Shirley Road and to ensure the area is connected by improved cycle and walking links. 

Phases of work

The works will be carried out in the following phases, between the working hours of approx. 7:30 am and 5 pm.

Phase 1a: Installation for new toucan crossing – will be carried out on Shirley Road next to Western District Cut starting on Monday, 4 October 2021 for three days.

We will need to implement a closure on Cawte Road to safely undertake the work with four-way lights on Shirley Road, Howard Road and Paynes Road junction. A signed diversion route will be put in place for all phases and a temporary bus stop. Please get in touch with your local bus operator for more information.

Phase 1b: Installation of kerbs and footway reconstruction – will be carried out on Shirley Road in the south-eastbound lane and northern footway outside IMO Car Wash (south of Malmesbury Road) starting on Monday, 4 October 2021 for two weeks.

We will need to close Dyer Road, and temporary two-way traffic lights will begin on Shirley Road on Thursday, 7 October. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout.

Phase 2a: Installation for new toucan crossing will be carried out on Shirley Road and a new continuous footway on Cawte Road starting on Thursday 7 October for up to four weeks.

We will need to implement a closure on Cawte Road, and a contraflow system on Shirley Road will be in place, with two-way traffic maintained. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout.

Phase 2b: Kerb line excavation and footway works – will be carried out on Shirley Road in the north-westbound lane and southern footway outside The Rover Public House (south of Dyer Road) starting on Wednesday 13 October for eleven days.

The road closure on Dyer Road will remain in place during this phase, and temporary two-way traffic lights will be on Shirley Road. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout.

Phase 3a: Footway works to install kerbing, tactile paving and footway reconstruction – will be carried out on Shirley Road next to Western District Cut on Monday 8 November for one week.

Cawte Road will remain closed, and a contraflow system will be on Shirley Road with two-way traffic maintained. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout.

Phase 3b: Installation of new parallel crossing and a new continuous footway – will be carried out on Shirley Road and Dyer Road on Monday 25 October for four weeks. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout.

Dyer Road will remain closed with minor carriageway incursion onto Shirley Road in the north-westbound traffic lane, maintaining two-way traffic.

Phase 4a: Carriageway lining and texprint – will be carried out on Shirley Road & Cawte Road on Friday 12 November for two nights between approx. 8 pm and 6 am.

Two-way traffic will be maintained during the first night of these works, and four-way lights will be implemented on Shirley Road, Howard Road, and Paynes Junction. We will need to keep Cawte Road closed during these works to undertake these works safely.

Phase 4b: Carriageway lining and texprint on Shirley Road and Dyer Road – we will write to you closer to the time once the dates and details have been confirmed.
