Howard Road planned works Autumn 2021

Summary

  • Where: Howard Road, Stafford Road & Suffolk Avenue
  • When: 6th September for up to 6 weeks.
  • What: : Footway and Carriageway works 
  • Why: To mitigate the impacts of increased traffic in the surrounding area of Howard Road.

In early 2021, Southampton City Council secured funding, through the Active Travel Fund, to delivery walking and cycling improvements for schools in the city. A range of measures have been identified to reduce the impact of through route traffic in the area and ensure that cycle and walking connection are protected at Howard Road.

Phases of work

Phase 1: Footway and Carriageway works – will be carried out on Stafford Road (south) starting on Monday, 6 September 2021 for two weeks between approx. 7am and 5pm.

This phase is to install a continuous footway crossing involving surfacing, kerbing, signage & drainage. In addition, we will be installing a new Zebra crossing on Howard Road. This phase will be in conjunction with phase 3 (please see map overleaf). We need to close Stafford Road (south) and part of the footway on Howard Road during this phase to undertake these works safely. Two-way traffic will be maintained, and pedestrian access will be maintained throughout. A signed diversion route will be put in place for all phases.

Phase 2a: Footway and Carriageway works – will be carried out on Stafford Road (north) western side of the road starting on Monday, 20 September 2021 for one week between approx. 7am and 5pm.

To undertake these works, we need to close Stafford Road (south) and Suffolk Avenue. Two-way traffic lights will be installed on Howard Road and Stafford Road (north). Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout.

Phase 2b: Footway and Carriageway works – will be carried out on Stafford Road (north) eastern side of the road starting on Monday, 27 September 2021 for one week between approx. 7am and 5pm.

To undertake these works, we need to close Suffolk Avenue and Stafford Road (south). Two-way traffic lights will be installed on Howard Road and Stafford Road (north). Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout.

Phase 3: Footway and Carriageway works – will be carried out on Suffolk Avenue starting on Monday, 4 October 2021 for two weeks between approx. 7am and 5pm.

This phase is to install a continuous footway crossing involving surfacing, kerbing, signage & drainage. In addition, we will be installing the remaining section of the Zebra crossing on Howard Road. To undertake these works, we need to close Suffolk Avenue and part of the footway on Stafford Road and Howard Road.

Phase 4: Monday 18 October 2021 night works; for up to take up to 1 week between approx. 8pm and 6am. This phase is to carry out carriageway resurfacing & white lining works for the final stage.

Night one: Carriageway resurfacing will be carried out between Shirley Road and Arthur Road on Howard Road. To undertake these works safely, we will need to close the junction of Suffolk Road, Stafford Road and Arthur Road with Howard Road. Resident access on Stafford Road North will be maintained throughout these works.

Night two: Carriageway resurfacing will be carried out between Arthur Road and Atherley Road on Howard Road. To undertake these works safely, we will need to close the junction of Arthur Road and Atherley Road with Howard Road.

Night three: Carriageaway resurfacing will be carried out between Atherley Road and Hill Lane on Howard Road. To undertake these works safely, we will need to close the junction of Thornbury Avenue with Howard Road

Night four: Carriageway resurfacing will be carried out between Shirley Road and Atherley Road on Howard Road. To undertake these works safely, we will close the junctions of Stafford Road, Suffolk Avenue, Arthur Road and Atherley Road with Howard Road.

Night five: Carriageway resurfacing will be carried out between Atherley Road and Hill Lane on Howard Road. To undertake these works safely, we will need to close the junction of Thornbury Avenue with Howard Road

Night six: The last night will enter its final stage, where Howard Road will be fully closed to complete the lining of the junction and installation works.
