St Marys Road Improvements FAQs and Survey Feedback

St Mary's Road Perception Survey

38 respondents answered questions about travelling in the area around St Mary's Road. They were asked about the modes of travel they use and what barriers there are that prevent them from using Active Travel. The survey was available from 18 February to 11 March 2021.

The most common mode of daily travel was walking, and respondents used their main mode of travel for convenience, to save time and for enjoyment.

The main barriers respondents faced to Active Travel was a lack of direct or safe routes for cycling, unsafe crossing points and the volume of traffic in the area.

Your said: Car is the only suitable mode of transport for some journeys / some residents

We did: While the design does not improve access to the area by car it does not have a negative impact on it either. Journey times by private car or bus will not be impacted on by the proposal

You said: A barrier to active travel is the lack of a direct and safe cycle facility

We did: This proposal provides a continuous cycle facility through St Mary’s Road which link to Charlotes Place roundabout and Bellevue Terrace which have existing cycle facilities. Along with neighbouring facilities this provides a direct and safe continuous cycle facilities and quite ways to the City Centre, Bevois Valley, Southampton Common, University of Southampton ect. On St Marys Road cyclists will be segregated from traffic by segregated lanes or their one stage at signal junctions

You said: Traffic noise, volume and speed is a key issue locally

We did: These proposals do not promote car travel via St Mary’s Road. The changes would likely lead some drivers to route via Dorset Street instead and would change the environment for drivers encouraging lower speeds

You said: There are not enough safe crossing points

We did: The design has looked at accommodating additional push button crossing facilities however due to space restriction between existing facilities this has not been possible

You said: Cycling on Road currently on suitable for confident / experience cyclists

We did: his facility provides segregation for cyclists from traffic and cycle facilities at busy junctions to make it a more desirable route for more cyclists

You said: Like the idea of improved cycling but not at the expense of drivers as people use both and hospital needs good car access

We did: While the design does not improve access to the area by car it does not have a negative impact on it either. Journey times by private car or bus will not be impacted on by the proposal

You said: The junction of St Mary’s Road / Bellevue Terrace and St Marys Road / Charlottes Place are not safe for cycling

We did: Proposals will add early release lights for cyclists at this signalised junction allowing cyclists to pass junction prior to other traffic being released. At the junction
