- Where: Coxford Road, between Vine Road and Warren Avenue
- When: From 23 April for nine weeks
- What: Widening Coxford Road to improve hospital access and relieve pinch point
Coxford Road will be closed one way from 23 April so that we can reconstruct the parking area with proper foundations and road surface. We will also be installing structural support within the grass verge to allow cars to park there.
We will begin work to widen Coxford Road at one of the entrances to Southampton General Hospital from Tuesday 23 April. This is expected to take up to nine weeks to complete.
We are funding the work through our roads resurfacing budget, alongside developer contributions from the hospital after they completed their new multi-storey car park.
The work will involve reconstructing a parking area so that it can carry buses and heavy traffic. To retain parking for residents, a length of overgrown verge has been cleared and will have an interlocking structure inserted so that the grass area can support vehicles.
We will be completing the work in two parts:
From Tuesday 23 April for seven weeks
Initially the construction and ground preparation works will require a 170m stretch of Coxford Road to be temporarily narrowed to one way westbound only (see map below). The ground preparation works are expected to take up to seven weeks.
Expected early June 2019, overnight only for two weeks
We will then be resurfacing overnight between 8pm and 6am. This phase is expected to take two weeks. The resurfacing will include the newly widened stretch of Coxford Road, as well as planned resurfacing as part of this year’s roads programme. This will include the mini roundabouts on Warren Avenue and the section of Coxford Road from Vine Road to Tremona Road.
Pedestrian access is being maintained throughout and there will be signed diversion routes in place. Further information and updates will be added to this page as we progress. Thank you for your patience.
